The Investigations Division handles all major criminal investigations such as homicide, rape, narcotics trafficking and complex financial crimes. Investigators also assist deputies who may require support with an investigation, additional manpower or specific expertise. The Property & Evidence Section is also managed by this Division.

The Investigations Division adopts a regional approach to law enforcement, working closely with surrounding local jurisdictions as well as state and federal agencies.

The Sheriff's Office has investigators assigned to the Merherrin Drug Task Force which is a multi-jurisdictional task force that provides narcotic investigators with addition resources from other task force agencies. The narcotic investigators assigned to this task force are sworn as Task Force Special Agents with the Virginia State Police allowing them to work in multiple jurisdictions; this allows them to work collectively in each jurisdiction as a team. They also work with federal agencies and prosecute under federal guidelines when appropriate.
